At Maven, we’re proud of the unique work we do. We love the fact that we’re not only able to help our clients achieve their dreams of writing books, but also to help them position themselves as experts in their fields, which propels their businesses forward.

We enjoy having the opportunity to share our work with others, which is why we are pleased to announce that we’ve entered one of our most recent books, Startup: From Idea to Launch: Navigating the Four Stages of a Startup Business, in the 2016 Davey Awards.

What is the Davey Awards competition?

The Davey Awards is one of the most prestigious competitions for small creative and design companies. The competition is named after the famous underdog story of David and Goliath, in which a weaker competitor rises to defeat a much bigger and stronger opponent. The Davey Awards “honor the ‘Creative Davids,’ who derive their strength from big ideas, rather than stratospheric budgets.”

The competition is judged by members of the Academy of Interactive and Visual Arts, which includes executives from some of the top design, media, and technology companies in the world. Among them: General Electric, Disney, Condé Nast, MTV, and Monster.com, just to name a few.

Each entry is considered and scored individually, as opposed to being compared to the other entries in its category. Based on a ten-point scale, entries can earn a Gold award (scoring 9.0 and above), or Silver (scoring 7.0 to 8.9). In addition to Gold and Silver awards, the judges will choose 11 “Best in Show” entries from the entire pool of Gold winners.

Last year, there were over 4,000 entries across over 100 categories in the Davey Awards, and this year promises to be even bigger. Startup is being entered into the E-book category, which is part of the Content Marketing division. Not all creative competitions have e-book categories, so we are very excited that the Davey Awards understands and recognizes how an e-book can be a powerful marketing tool.

About Startup:

Startup is Maven Publishing’s most recent full-length book. It is a collaborative effort between Modmacro CEO Matthew Smith and Maven CEO Jessica Dawson and was written with the goal of helping first-time entrepreneurs prepare for some of the challenges that arise when starting a business.

The book contains personal perspectives from Smith and Dawson, including stories from their respective companies’ early days. In it, you’ll also find examples from local San Diego and Southern California companies, as well as stories from a few nationally and internationally-known companies like Starbucks and FUBU.

It is a must-read for anyone who is thinking about starting their first business, but even experienced business owners will hopefully learn something from it, especially anyone who is at a turning point in their business, or whose business has gone through a major growth or downsizing.

Startup is available on all major e-book platforms, including Amazon, iBooks, Nook, and Kobo. It is also available in paperback.
