We have exciting news! A new release is coming soon from us at Maven Publishing, and it’s one that is sure to be both helpful and enjoyable to any small business owner. Simple Business Advice will be Modmacro CEO Matthew Smith’s third full-length book, and in addition to Kill the Noise and Startup, this is also the third full-length collaboration between Smith and Maven Publishing.

The idea for this book came from a series of articles Smith has been writing for Businessing Magazine, also titled “Simple Business Advice.” He’s worked with many small business owners over the years in different capacities, and one thing they all have in common is that they all need help and guidance at times. Some business owners are fortunate enough to have mentors or coaches, but many don’t. Most business owners learn by doing (i.e. by messing up a few times), or by asking around, oftentimes via a Google search. Smith wanted to create a resource for small business owners where they could find helpful tips without having to waste time sorting through all of the (often irrelevant) information that might come up in an internet-wide search.

The series had been quite popular and he felt like the next step would be to put it all in one place, and turn it into a must-read for any small business owner. Each chapter in the book is a single topic or single piece of advice, some of which came from the original series. Writing a book like this has allowed Smith to expand a little more on each topic, and also to invite other business owners he respects to add chapters of their own and provide advice that they’ve found helpful or important.

Those who have followed along with the article series in Businessing Magazine have said that the articles feel like Smith is talking directly to them. Similarly, reading the book makes you feel like you’re in a conversation with Smith and other business owners. To add to the casual, laid-back format, we’ve also included illustrations that accompany many of the chapters, which is not something we get to do very often. It’s a fun addition, and we hope you enjoy them as much as we have!

Smith says, “Advice is easy to come by… but simple, direct, actionable advice isn’t always as plentiful,” but we believe this book is a big step in the right direction. We think it is one of those books that you’ll come back to again and again, and probably learn something new every time.
